This is the most appropriate type of interpreting for big events such as conventions, congresses and conferences in which several languages are spoken and fluent communication is required. It is also used on TV broadcasts.
To ensure the highest standards, interpreters must work in pairs at all times and switch every 30 minutes. The interpreters work in soundproofed booths, translating the speakers’ message in real time.
The room in which the event takes place must have built in interpreting booths or enough space to set up portable ones.
This technique is mainly used for speeches, conferences, business meetings, product presentations, press conferences and interviews.
Using a special technique, the interpreter takes notes of what the speaker is saying and orally translates it, at intervals ranging between 5 and 15 minutes, by using notes and memory.
The advantage of this type of interpretation is that it does not require any special technical equipment. However, enough time should be set aside for the interpreter to express the message in the other language.
As it does not require any special equipment, this type of less formal interpreting is also used at meetings, receptions, business lunches or dinners, trade fairs and public appearances (courts, police stations, etc.) with smaller groups of up to 25 people.
The interpreter orally translates the conversations to and from the languages used. The speakers pause after presenting an idea to allow the interpreter to translate the message.
